In a time gone by library patrons had no choice. They would need to come in person to get a loan of a book and faced late charges if the tome was not returned in time, but that is so 20th Century.

While Mount Kisco Public Library patrons can still borrow books the traditional way, thanks to a new program a person no longer needs to leave home to borrow. In fact, they can do so without potential late fees.

Library Director Susan Riley said on Sept. 28 that a new program can now download books on their Amazon Kindles. “It’s just started this week,” Riley said.

OverDrive, the e-books provider for the Westchester Library System, now has support for the Amazon Kindle. The new program will be a boon to Kindle owners, Riley said. “There are a lot of Kindle users our there spending a lot of money on e-books,” she said. “But now they can get them for free through us and residents with a Mount Kisco Library card have access to additional bestselling titles purchased specifically for our own patrons.” Riley said The library has purchased 30 bestsellers exclusively for its patrons that can be downloaded on to a Kindle, she said.

“It’s a big thing,” Riley said.

An added bonus is when the two-week book loan period ends, it just disappears from the Kindle, resulting in no late fees, Riley said.

Though library patrons are enthusiastic about the new program, some have said it has been difficult to download their first e-book, Riley said. Volunteers are helping teach patrons how to download to their Kindles on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. at the library, which is located at 100 E. Main St.
