New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins easily held off the challenge by Westchester County Legislator Virginia Perez in the Democratic Primary for Senate District 35.

Stewart-Cousins is the leader of the state Senate Democratic Conference.

By Friday morning, according to the Westchester Board of Elections tally, with 100 percent of the voting districts having reported, Stewart-Cousins maintained 81 percent of the vote with 24,117 votes to Perez’s 5,614 (19 percent).

She faces no opposition in the November election.

“Voters again made it clear that this is a new day and politics as usual are no longer acceptable. Now is the time for us to move forward as a strong progressive Democratic Conference. Senate Republicans have held New York back for too long, and the oncoming #BlueWave will elect a functional Democratic Majority in November,” Senator Stewart-Cousins said about her primary win.
