Possible Tornado Causes Outages in Ossining and Croton
A violent storm, that may have included a possible tornado, caused over 6,000 homes in Croton and Ossining to be without power on Friday evening.
A downed tree that appears to have been struck by some force of nature blocked the southbound lane of Route 9 near the northern border of Ossining about 6:15 p.m. It took down power lines and by 11 p.m. the road was still closed to southbound traffic.
Witnesses on the scene claimed that the tree was hit by a tornado. The National Weather Service has not confirmed that there was an actual tornado that touched down in Ossining.
It did issue a tornado warning for Westchester until 6:30 p.m. A tornado watch was in effect until 11 p.m.
There are 2,300 power outages in the Village of Ossining, 1,500 in the Town of Ossining and another 1,800 in Croton, according to the Con Edison storm outage map. The map predicts that most of the power should be restored by 5 a.m. But Eagle Bay Condominiums should not expect to regain power until 3 p.m. on Saturday.
There were also reports of a tornado touched down in Goshen.
