Putnam County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler will soon be leaving her position and taking over as the commissioner of health for Westchester County, Putnam County Executive Paul Eldridge announced Thursday.

“As I move on to new responsibilities, I want to thank our wonderful County Executive, Paul Eldridge, and all of my good friends and coworkers in Putnam County,” Amler said in a press release sent out by Eldridge’s office. “The Health Department staff, in particular, deserves great praise for their genuine and tangible accomplishments of the last six years. I will always treasure the creative and collegial way we worked together, and will always remember our team with warmth and pride.”

Amler will assume her new role on Oct. 3, according to Eldridge.

“It is with mixed emotions that I announce the selection of Dr. Amler to become the Westchester County Commissioner of Health,” Eldridge said in the press release. “On one hand, I am extremely pleased and excited for Dr. Amler and her selection by Westchester County, but at the same time saddened that we will be losing such a talented, capable and caring individual as head of our Department of Health.”

Amler was first appointed in 2004 by former county executive Bob Bondi and has held the position through two administrations.
