Mohegan Lake resident Jimena Coello officially opened JMCO Events last September, but she has actually been in the event planning business “for quite some time.”

“I’ve always loved the event planning business,” Coello said during an interview last week.

Coello said she strives to put on events that will give her clients something to remember and make the sites of the gatherings look beautiful. For example, when she plans a wedding she wants the bride and groom “to not have to worry” because she will take care of all the arrangements.

“I take all the pressure off their shoulders,” she said. “I do everything from finding the venue, catering. I do the invitations, bridal parties, everything.”

She plans anniversary and corporate parties, having recently staged several holiday parties for companies. Coello has also planned birthday parties, including themed celebrations. “I just had a 60th birthday party for this gentleman who used to be a hippie back in the day,” she said. “Everybody dressed up as hippies. The whole venue was decorated as hippie themed. It was amazing. He loved every second of it.”

Coello has no employees. “I do everything from scratch,” she said. “I’m a multi-taker. I’m good at task management. I think to make an event successful you have to be very detail orientated. You have to know what your clients want and exceed their expectations,” Coello said.

Coello is active with the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce. Last fall she volunteered for the street fair. “I pretty much helped set up the event,” she said. “That was the first event I’ve done, but I plan on being an active member of it. I just love to help the community.”

JMCO is an acronym based on her full name — Jimena Maria Coello, she said.

Coello was not always an event planner. She was formerly a paralegal for several years. Coello said she has not regretted her decision to change careers. “It was a little scary, but I have my family and friends to support me,” she said.

Coello said she had goals for her business. “I obviously want it to grow. I want it to be a huge success. I think I have it within me to make it happen,” she said. “My goals will be just to grow and throw the best parties, weddings in Westchester County.”
