Small Business Saturday is a nationwide event founded by American Express in 2010 to help small business owners get a year-end push. It is scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving, right after Black Friday, and takes place this year on November 30th.

With the help of the White Plains Business Improvement District (BID) and their new Director of Events and Business Promotions, Brittany Brandwein, several retailers in the city’s downtown are gearing up for a big day.

The special spin in White Plains will be the addition of super savings promoted through the existing Shop White Plains Discount Card program. Participating retailers, restaurants and service providers that show the Shop White Plains decal in their store windows always offer a 10 percent or greater discount to shoppers who have purchased the Shop White Plains discount card.

The cards sell for a one-time fee of $5 and provide access to big savings. They can be purchased online by visiting www.wpbid.com.

On Saturday, Nov. 30 the fun begins at The Iron Tomato (57 Mamaroneck Ave.), where the Shop White Plains Discount Cards will be distributed free to customers from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then at 2 p.m. the challenge is on to see who can beat Joe the Baker in a  Cannoli Eating Contest. The winner gets a $100 gift certificate to The Iron Tomato or The Iron Shaker.
