About 200 veterans and community members turned out Monday morning at Peekskill’s Monument Park for a ceremony commemorating Memorial Day.

In addition to hearing from politicians like Peekskill Mayor Mary Foster and Westchester County Legislator John Testa, the crowd heard from John Singleton, a recent veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan. Singleton spoke to the crowd about soldiers’ special “warrior spirits,” emphasizing veterans’ selflessness, loyalty and personal courage.

A bagpiper led the crowd in a moment of silence following Singleton’s remarks. The ceremony also included performances by the Peekskill High School band and a folk singer who sang a song about the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC, to commemorate that war’s 50th anniversary.
