Eldridge Vetoes Term Limit Legislation
Putnam County Executive Paul Eldridge vetoed legislation passed last year by the county legislature to enact term limits. In a letter explain
ing the veto, Eldridge said the resolution that was passed incorrectly uses the word “tolling,” making the term limits inapplicable for an indefinite period of time.
Eldridge vetoed the legislation Monday after last week receiving a memo from Danielle Harris of the county’s law department explaining the problem with the resolution’s language.
The law that was passed was meant to enact term limits for county legislators (four consecutive three-year terms or six terms in a lifetime) and the county executive (two four-year terms). Eldridge said in his veto letter that he supported term limits but thought they should be equal for legislators and the county executive.
