After nearly three decades in government, White Plains Planning Commissioner Susan Habel announced she will be retiring this summer.

Habel, who has been planning commissioner since 2002 and was deputy commissioner from 1985 to 2001, said Aug. 9 will be her last day with the city.

“I wanted to spend time with my kids, my grandchildren, and travel with my husband,” Habel said. “It’s been a very, very good 27 years and now it’s time to spend more time with my family.”

A native of Switzerland, Habel was brought on by the city after running a not-for-profit housing organization in White Plains. Before coming to White Plains, she taught at Kalamazoo College in Michigan.

“I’m sure there are many aspects of it I’ll miss,” Habel said. “Working 24/7, I’m not sure if I’ll miss that.”

Habel has served with five different mayors in her tenure at the planning department.
