When the Berg brothers took over the Iron Tomato a few years back, they shook up the north end of Mamaroneck Avenue with a new type of food market and dining experience that made just about everyone living and working in White Plains take notice.

Michael and Steven are about to do it again with the opening this week of an additional venture, The Iron Shaker, just two doors down from their original address. They refer to their new project as a food studio and cocktail lounge.

At 49 Mamaroneck Avenue, The Iron Shaker, will take over the location of the former Gryphon’s Pub, but the address is the only thing these two establishments have in common.

As soon as you open the door, you know the brothers went all out on this one. The interior is classy with a lounge area and simulated fireplace at the back, a good-sized bar, booths and open seating at the front. Along one wall is an interesting artistic treatment, with images of past queens from what appears to be the Victorian era, giving an intriguing yet sophisticated ambiance to the place in a way that says everything will be done to please and done just right .

If you think the food at the Iron Tomato is good, the menu at The Iron Shaker has been taken up several notches and will feature dinner entrees including Prime American Lamb Chops, Ahi Tuna, and Pork Bellies with an apple cider and BBQ glaze. A small plates theme is emphasized; the aim is to provide the most exquisite taste experience.

A Manhattan mixologist has been hired who has developed a list of 10 unique cocktails made with top-shelf liquors mixed in a metal and glass shaker – hence the establishment’s name – with an extra large ice cube and special flick of the wrist to chill the drink, but not allow the ice to melt.

All thought has gone into providing the extra finesse demanded by the true VIP.

The brothers say you can gain entrance by being 25 years or older, and a strict dress code will be enforced at their discretion. Think business casual as a start if you want to make this your evening’s destination.

The Iron Shaker is also available for parties and can accommodate up to 100 people. For more information visit www.theironshaker.com
