Police gather evidence at the scene where a young man was shot on Lake Street in White Plains Friday afternoon.

A young man is in surgery after being shot in the leg and arm in White Plains Friday afternoon, police said.

A male suspect police described on Saturday only as a “young man” has been arrested and charged with first degree assault. Police are also searching for an additional suspect.

Police received several 9-1-1 calls at around 4 p.m. Friday reporting someone had been shot between 92 and 94 Lake Street, White Plains Police Department Assistant Chief Anne FitzSimmons said. Police responded and found a young man, believed to be a teenager, on the ground with gunshot wounds to the leg and arm, she said.

The young man, who police said has been identified but whose name has not yet been released pending notification of the family, was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for surgery. FitzSimmons said the victim is in stable but critical condition.

Police are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, according to Fitzsimmons.

Traffic was blocked on Lake Street at the intersection with Kensico Avenue early Friday evening, as a small crowd watched as police worked at the scene.
