White Plains Police taped off an area around the City Center after a suspicious package was reported. It turned out not to be a threat.

White Plains Police brought a bomb-sniffing dog into the City Center after a suspicious package was reported late Friday night, Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said. The package turned out to be personal effects left by a shopper, Chong said, but he commended the person who reporter it for “being vigilant” and not taking any chances.

A small area between the building and the parking garage was closed off with police tape just after midnight Saturday morning, as police investigated reports of the package. The dog did not detect any explosives, Chong said, and the package’s owner later came forward and apologized. The building was not evacuated.

Chong said there have been numerous calls of packages lying around, as the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks approaches.

“If you do see something in the next couple of days, please, say something,” said Chong. “We will respond and check it out; no harm, no foul.”

Chong also urged residents and visitors not to be careless and leave things lying around that could be perceived as possible threats.
