Residents Worry Chappaqua May Be Without Supermarket

Residents are concerned that D'Agastino, Chappaqua's only supermarket, will be leaving the hamlet and be replaced by a Walgreens.

Despite denials from D’Agastino’s, a Chappaqua resident is doing what she can to keep D’Agastino, Chappaqua’s only supermarket, from leaving the hamlet and being replaced by a Walgreens. Debbie Glickman has launched an online petition to encourage the town and the landlord to keep a supermarket in Chappaqua. Three months ago, Glickman, a frequent D’Agastino customer, found out that the supermarket was looking to sell its lease.

The supermarket chain, which has headquarters in Larchmont, closed a location in Cross River recently. If D’Agastino, located on King Street, were to leave, New Castle would be left with the Village Market on South Greeley Avenue and A&P in Millwood.

“It’s been my mission lately,” Glickman said. “There is a lot of vagueness. I’m frustrated. I have spoken to some other grocery chains that would be interested. It’s very fishy, there’s no real cut and dry answer.”

Robert Elfinger, a spokesman for Walgreens, said that no lease has been signed for Chappaqua, and would only be able to comment if a lease was signed. A spokesperson for D’Agastino said the company has no information about the supermarket being closed.
