Letter to the Editor: Greene’s Vision Would Make Peekskill a Better City

We are part of The Trust Project

Why is the Democratic Party in Peekskill having a primary? Not because the city has been mismanaged, but because the current management is overlooking important needs.

Conor Greene, a Democrat and Progress4Peekskill mayoral candidate, has experience and knowledge from working for the New York City Council, nonprofits, working with community organizations like Peekskill Walks and through the pursuit of his master’s degree in Urban Planning to make Peekskill a better place for all current residents. He hopes to prepare the city for the great infrastructure and social changes and challenges of the future and make Peekskill a positive force against climate change.

Conor wants the city to grow, and developers want to build here. He and his running mates have policies and strategies to increase the number of workforce and affordable homes, to demand more from developers and to expand the tax base so that taxes remain affordable and current residents can stay in their homes. In addition, he’s shown through the Esther Place project that there are no-cost improvements that will make Peekskill a safer and more livable, walkable city and will attract people to visit and spend time and money enjoying themselves.

The 1968 Master Plan must be redone. Yes, that will cost money. But Conor knows that not redeveloping the city plan will result in lost revenue while a new plan will help attract good investment to support the tax base and create local jobs.  The old infrastructure must be fully reviewed and energy and climate change problems must be identified and prioritized. This can only happen with a comprehensive study resulting in clear policy.

Peekskill is a rare example of a small, historic, multicultural city in an amazing natural environment that is ready to be a city of the future, both structurally and culturally. To make it the best it can be, Peekskill needs the knowledge, experience, energy and passion of Conor Greene.

During early voting right now and on June 22, primary election day, join me in voting for Conor Greene for mayor of Peekskill and his P4P running mates Vanessa Agudelo, Amy Perlow and Amy Vele for City Council.
