On a beautiful Saturday afternoon the Hackley Hornets held Senior Day for their field hockey team. A group of 13 seniors were honored before and after the game. The day became a complete success when they defeated Masters 2-1.

Caroline Chimel scored the Hornets’ first goal and Melissa Chervin scored their second goal. With the victory the Hornets improved their record to 6-5-2 on the season.

This week the Hornets have two away games and the playoffs will begin the following week. According to head coach Jenny Leffler the Hornets can tie for first place of the Ivy League if they defeat Horace Mann on Wednesday and the official playoff brackets should be released on Friday. Leffler believes that her team will make the playoffs if they’re able to defeat Horace Mann.

Leffler is pleased at how her squad is playing at the moment.

“I think we’re playing real nicely,” said Leffler. “We had a very nice game yesterday, a nice win against Riverdale after a really tough loss to Fieldston in the middle of the week. We rebounded very nicely yesterday and today we had a hard time putting the ball in the goal, but I think we dominated the game.”

This fall the Hornets had a very challenging schedule in the middle of their season.

“The middle of the season was very tough. We played some very competitive teams and that’s always hard. We played very well in both the Greenwich Academy and Sacred Heart games, but it always takes a toll on the team to play games like that. I think they’re pulling it together and we’re feeling really good right now,” said Leffler.

In 2012 the Hornets have 13 senior girls on their roster. This is one of the biggest number of seniors Leffler had in her 19 years coaching at Hackley. In this senior class 12 out of the 13 girls have been playing field hockey for Hackley since the seventh grade.

For the Hornets to be successful in the playoffs Leffler believes her team has to do several things.

“I think we have to continue to think,” said Leffler.  “I think we have to think where we’re sending the ball, be aggressive and then also trust each other and continue to communicate.
