Dr. Olivia Hooker, a 96-year-old retired psychology professor and civil rights and women’s rights activist, was given top honors at the 29th Annual Senior Hall of Fame Luncheon at the Westchester Marriot in Tarrytown.

“Let us vow here today, in the silence of this room, that we will use every effort to return our country to its prominent stature as the sentinel of success and compassion and the sentinel of achievement,” Hooker, a Greenburgh resident, said as she accepted the award. “That will bring us back and up and onward.”

Joan DiPalma of Rye, Armando Galella of Sleepy Hollow, Carol Greenberg of White Plains, Louise D. Muller of Pelham and Stephen J. Siegel of White Plains all received special recognition at Friday’s ceremony. In total, 43 Westchester seniors were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“All of our honorees have dedicated their time and their talents to improve the quality of life here in Westchester,” Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett said. “Indeed, Westchester County is a much better place thanks to the contributions of all our nominees and the many honorees who preceded them.”

The Senior Hall of Fame, established in 1982, is sponsored by the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, Westchester County Parks and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services and is cosponsored by the Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester and Putnam. More than 900 seniors have been inducted.
