In an event aimed at battling Childhood Obesity, Blythedale Children’s Hospital celebrated National Food Day a week early last Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

Blythedale teamed up with Kohl’s Department Stores for the National Food Day Celebration, which looked to show kids and parents alike that a healthy lifestyle didn’t have to be difficult or expensive.

“This is all about educating parents and their children how great it is to eat healthy and how great it tastes,” said Lena Cavanna, the director of Community and Media Relations for Blythedale. “Showing parents that you can eat healthy economically and your kids will love the vegetables and fruits.”

“Sneaky Chef” Missy Chapin Lapine was on hand demonstrating some healthy recipes, while Antoine Dove of the NBC reality TV show “The Biggest Loser” spoke about how he learned to live a healthier lifestyle. There was also a farmers’ market and a “movement room,” where kids were shown some easy ways to exercise without joining a gym.

Since 2006, Blythedale and Kohl’s have teams up for a children’s nutrition program called “Eat Well, Be Well.”

“We go out into the community and into the school district and we teach healthy eating to kids from kindergarten to fifth grade,” Cavanna explained.

Since 2000, Kohl’s has donated more than $2 million, according to Cavanna.

National Food Day is Tuesday, Oct. 25. Blythedale Children’s Hospital is located at 95 Bradhurst Ave. in Valhalla. For more information visit www.blythedale.org.
