Daniel Hagen (about to turn 11 years old) of Eastview Middle School, White Plains, won second place in the Tri-State Chess Championship held July 17 at Bryant Park in New York City. Daniel has been taking group chess lessons weekly at Mamaroneck Avenue School since first grade. The MAS chess team competed all over Westchester for a few years and won many trophies. Daniel has been the only player from White Plains to travel into New York each year for the tri-state tournament. Four years ago, he won third place at the same tournament.

Daniel plans to continue playing competitively. Looking to the future, he has already set his sights on attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and joining their chess team – as a good chess player Daniel knows that to win you have to be many moves ahead.
