Support-A-Walk for the Soul Sunday at FDR Park

We are part of The Trust Project

Support Connection-2It’s the feel good event of the fall, and it’s this Sunday morning at FDR State Park in Yorktown.

Support Connection’s 19th annual Support-A-Walk for breast and ovarian cancer is expected one again to draw close to 10,000 people to celebrate the lives of those who have defeated the disease or are courageously batting it, and honor those who lost their fight but their fighting spirit  lives on.

Executive Director Katherine Quinn said her organization is unique in that it is one of the few in the country that offers counseling, support, and educational and wellness programs for people with breast or ovarian cancer from counselors who know what it’s like to have cancer.

“It is heartwarming to see thousands of people gather at the walk and help raise money so we can be there for the many people who rely on us,” Quinn said. “Each year, we celebrate and pay honor to loved ones who have been impacted by breast and ovarian cancer. It is a wonderful day. Even though thousands of people attend the walk, it feels like a family gathering. Whether you are there to increase awareness about breast and ovarian cancer, celebrate or remember a loved one, the strength of community shines through. Watching all the walkers still takes my breath away.”

More than 200 volunteers pitch in to make the day a success. Pre-walk activities and entertainment, including team photos, music and warm-up exercises, kick off at 9 a.m. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the three-mile walk takes place at 10 a.m. sharp.

There will also be a Survivors Welcome Area and various merchandise for sale from vendors. All the proceeds from the walk go right back into the services Support Connection offers.

“The Support-A-Walk is all about community,” Quinn said. “Even though we have people coming from miles away, everyone is part of one family that day. I can’t say enough thank you’s to all who make this event so wonderful.”
