It was great to see the bleachers filled at Gillie Park with excited fans watching the White Plains Recreation Department Women’s League Softball Championship, on Wednesday, Aug. 27. Even Westchester County Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Kathleen O’Connor attended the game to support Healy Electric, as her daughter Lauren O’Connor bats cleanup for the Peaches.

After Healy Electric won the first game 10-5, behind winning pitcher Kate Fox; the Lazy Boys Bombshells “woke-up” to come back from an 11-4 deficit in the second game to win 18-13, and force a deciding Game Three, on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. in Gillie Park.

Healy Electric only had one loss during the regular season behind steady pitching by Kate Fox. In the first game of the best two-out-of-three games in the White Plains Women’s League Softball Championship, Fox pitched five scoreless innings to win the game 10-5. In the second game Fox seemed to tire in the latter innings, as Lazy Boys came-back to score 14 runs and win 18-13.

Lazy Boys season almost ended in defeat, while losing 11-4 in the fifth inning of Game Two, after losing the first game of the two-out-of-three games series. However, in dramatic fashion the Bombshells scored five runs in the fifth inning and nine runs in the sixth inning, while their pitcher Heather Kleinberger held the Peaches to two runs. “Absolutely, (I thought we could come back), that is what we do, when we wake up, we wake up and we woke up,” stated Lazy Boys’ Manager Kate Fucci.

After the Bombshells were losing in the second game, 11-4, in the top of the fifth inning, they scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 11-9. Peaches always steadfast pitcher Fox, seemed to tire in the sixth inning walking three batters and walking in a run, before Fucci singled for Lazy Boys to tie the game, 12-12.

Kleinberger had a rough start relinquishing six runs in the first inning and 11 runs by the fifth inning. But she settled down to hold Healy Electric to two runs in the next two innings to give her team a chance to come back and win, 18-13.

A sacrifice fly by Bombshells leftfielder Tina Rodriguez scored the go-ahead run and then Bombshells’ catcher Sandy Nunez captioned the nine-run sixth inning with a three-run triple. “I was just trying to get a base hit but the pitch was good, I got lucky and found a hole,” said Nunez.

Therefore, Lazy Boys (12-4), the number three-seed, lives to play another day and that will be in deciding Game Three, on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Gillie Park.

The loss to the Bombshells in Game Two of the Women’s League Championship was only the second loss for the number one seed Healy Electric (13-2) all season.
