The Harrison High girls tennis team maintained its grip on first place in League 2D last week by picking up a 7-0 win over Scarsdale on Monday.

The easy win upped Harrison’s season mark to 9-3 overall, and the team remains in first place in League 2D with a 6-1 mark.

Not bad for a team that managed just three wins last fall.

“The team has been clicking the last couple of weeks now,” Huskies coach Justin Loeb said. “We’ve been consistently playing well. We’re getting good performances from all three singles, and doubles one, two and three have been solid all year. We’re rotating our fourth doubles in each match, and they’ve all been stepping up.”

At Scarsdale last week, Deana Giambo, Ella Eisinger and Sydney Muller all picked up wins in singles play, and Harrison’s doubles teams of Elisa Pettinato and Lauren Nielson, Sydney Saviano and Jessica Saviano, Sarina Iraj and Ayaka Yorihiro, and Ava Ganik and Lindsay Amann were all victorious.

“Our first doubles team, Pettinato and Nielson, won a super third-set tiebreaker,” Loeb said. “They won 10-6 in the third, and this was the second time they beat this team in a super tiebreaker. They played well, and that will help them down the road.”

Loeb said several other players have also been hot, including the seventh-grade Saviano sisters, now 11-1.   “The Savianos keep rolling along,” the coach said. “I want to keep them as focused as possible, improve their game. And our third doubles team, Iraj and Yorihiro, have been as reliable as our second. They played together last year, and they’ve been clicking. They only have one loss all year.

“And our first doubles, Pettinato and Nielson, are also playing well,” the coach added. “They’re playing good quality matches, and they’ve been more aggressive lately. They’re really figuring out each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”

And the team’s singles players have been stepping up their games as well.

“All three singles have stepped it up,” Loeb said. “Giambo, a seventh-grader, is 10-2, and has been very impressive. For a seventh-grader to be playing first singles is impressive, and I’m very happy with the way she’s been competing. Eisinger is also having a comeback season. She only has two losses, and our third singles, Muller, has also been steady.”

Harrison was scheduled to host Pelham today (Tuesday) at 4:15 p.m., and the Huskies host Rye Neck Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
