Five Primaries Set for September

The sheriff’s race will be the most high-profile contest in this season’s primary election, but it won’t be the only one. It is one of four Republican primaries to be held on Sept. 10, according to a candidate’s list released by the county’s Board of Elections.

All eyes will be focused Sheriff Don Smith’s showdown with former MTA Police Chief Kevin McConville, as the two vie for the Republican line. With no Democratic opponent, the primary is expected to determine the election, though both candidates will likely have third-party lines.

Legislator Anthony DiCarlo, who represent’s Mahopac’s District 9, faces a primary challenge from former Legislator and District Attorney Kevin Wright. Democrat Bernard Kosberg will be on the ballot in November’s general election. DiCarlo is on the Independence line while Wright has the Conservative line, meaning a three-person general election is likely.

In both Kent and Southeast, three Republican candidates are vying for two seats. Kent Councilman Louis Tartaro is joined on the ballot by Janice Balbrock and Paul Denbaum. In Southeast, Council members Liz Hudak and Robert Cullen faces a challenge from Dennis Sant.

While Legislative Chairman Richie Othmer has no opponent for the Republican line in his bid for Kent Highway Superintendent, Gilbert Tarbox is challenging Othmer for the Independence line.
