Examiner Media Publisher Honored by Editor & Publisher

We are part of The Trust Project
Examiner Media Publisher Adam Stone with daughter Madeleine.

Examiner Media’s owner, Adam Stone, was named in this month’s issue of Editor & Publisher as one of the magazine’s “25 Under 35: The Next Generation of Publishing Leaders.”

The monthly trade publication, the country’s oldest journal covering the newspaper industry, featured the story on the front page of its April edition.

Stone, now 32, started Examiner Media in 2007, when he was 29.

The brief profile of Stone in the magazine (which covers the entire North American newspaper industry) cites how when The Examiner was launched, the publisher assisted with distribution of the free newspaper.

The article also briefly summarizes the company’s growth, pointing to its expanding revenue, web presence and social media footprint.

The special feature also spotlights 24 other young publishing talents from the United States and Canada, with accolades going to a wide range of honorees — from newspaper editors and publishers from small weeklies to big city journalists from large dailies such as The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune.

The Examiner started as a weekly covering just Mt. Kisco and Pleasantville. Examiner Media now publishes three newspapers, The Examiner, The Northern Westchester Examiner and The Putnam Examiner. Each covers at least half dozen municipalities, along with the area’s school districts. The Putnam Examiner was launched in March of 2009 and The Yorktown Examiner was introduced about nine months later, in December of 2009. This week, the company decided to rename The Yorktown Examiner, re-branding it into The Northern Westchester Examiner to reflect its broader coverage area.

Late last year, Examiner Media transitioned its website, www.TheExaminerNews.com, from a static site that only featured basic information about the company and converted it into a platform for breaking news and other local content, such as guest commentary from area bloggers.

Also, the company’s Twitter feed — @examinerstone — is one of the most popular in the region with nearly 2,000 followers. The company has begun to take more aggressive steps to enhance its business Facebook page, Examiner Media.

Stone studied journalism at Hofstra University, graduating from the university in 2001. While at Hofstra, Stone secured an American Society of Magazine Editor’s internship, serving as a fact-checker/reporter at Time Inc., for People magazine.

Before starting Examiner Media, Stone was a staffer at three Hudson Valley-area newspapers, working for The Journal News weeklies, Times-Herald Record, a daily headquartered in Middletown, and the former North County News, where he won New York Press Association awards for news and sports writing and reporting.

He also published as a freelancer for Newsday, The Daily News and The New York Times, among other newspapers and magazines.
