The Carmel Town Board has approved a plan to install two new security cameras and replace the floor in the meeting/courtroom in town hall.

Justice Court Clerk Pat Genna told the town board on May 28 that most of the funding for the purchases will come from a grant she obtained for the town.

Genna said the town received $14,580 from the state Justice Court Assistance Program.

Electronic waste agreement

Also at the meeting the town board expressed its support to enter into a formal agreement with Putnam County to continue to operate its electronic waste drop off site, located at the town’s salt storage shed on Route 6N.

In his recent letter to the town board county Commissioner of Health Dr. Allen Beals wrote, “This agreement will ensure the continuing provision of this service at no cost to the municipalities.”

Beals stated that beginning in 2008 the county arranged to place e-waste in each town. The county is requesting that all Putnam municipalities approve the formal agreement because it entered in to an agreement with a new contractor in January to remove the waste, which will be safely disposed, Beals stated.

Schmitt said the agreement will be in effect through the end of the year, with options for municipalities to extend the contract.

The e-waste program is popular in Carmel, Schmitt said. “A lot of people take advantage of it,” he said.

E-waste can be dropped off at the salt shed every Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A variety of electronic waste items can be dropped off, including computers, cell phones, televisions, IPods, as well as many types of household items.
