Mahopac resident John Malzone is celebrating a special anniversary in 2015.

This is the 25th year for the company he created, Custom Interior Remodeling in Mahopac.

“I do kitchens, bathrooms, basements, hardwood flooring, tiles, sheet rock, painting, all interior work is what I do,” Malzone said last week. “I only do one job at a time.”

“I’m not staffed for exterior work at all,” he said. “I’ve kept its small and at this point I’m 100 percent word of mouth. I don’t even advertise at this point anymore. So I’m very happy about that.”

Keeping his business small and simple have been keys to the success of Custom Interior Remodeling, Malzone said. “I just found it to be so much easier going from job to job,” he said. “My work speaks for itself. At this point, I don’t spend a penny advertising.”

Malzone’s first career was not in interior remodeling. “I was a mailman. That wasn’t very easy to do,” he recalled. “I just couldn’t advance in the post office. There wasn’t any room for advancement back then.”

“I was always very handy,” Malzone said. He watched his uncle and helped out with various jobs in his home. “I got better and better and better.” He added that started out professionally doing interior remodeling at nights while working for the Postal Service. “At that point that when I decided, hey, I can make a go at this,” he said.

After discussing the possible career change with his wife, Diane, Malzone decided to go into business on his own.

Malzone said his customers come from Westchester and Putnam counties and Connecticut. Malzone did last week’s interview in the Heritage Hills condominium complex in Somers where he was involved in a job. He already had his next job lined up in Mahopac and a future job in Connecticut. “I’m pretty well booked now until probably February,” Malzone said.

“I’m here every single day until the job is complete,” he said.

Malzone said he wanted to continue his business for another decade, and then retire to “enjoy my life with my wife and my grandchildren.”

The best part of his work is comparing before and after photos of the homes his company works on, Malzone said. “Seeing the final product and the smiles on people’s faces” is very gratifying, he said.
